HOUSES on A STREET
One of my objectives in going to East Douglas was to find the Coppola house. I thought it was on A Street, but my research provided conflicting information. Some documents said "A Street" while others indicated "Cross Street" and "Jones Court." When I arrived at the Simon Fairfield Public Library, I asked Rebecca Lavallee, Library Archivist and Historian, if they had any old town directories or maps. After I told Rebecca of the confusing street information, she went to her transcribed copy of the 1959 edition of Lucius J. Marsh's book, History of the Town of Douglas" and solved the problem for me.
Here is an excerpt from the section, "A Street or Cross Street" [1959]:
Here is an excerpt from the section, "A Street or Cross Street" [1959]:
"The street which runs from Cemetery Street across Manchaug Street and then up back again into Manchaug Street by the old St. Denis Church building is called Cross Street although it was named A Street by the Town in 1870. It was once called Jones Court."
"Between 1875-1880, the houses now owned and occupied by Joseph T. Roche, Edward Auger, Irene Kalvinek and sister and the one which stood where the Saviano house now is which was burned in 1925, were built by Aaron F. Jones. That was why it was called “Jones Court.” |
Below are photos of the Coppola, Vecchione, and Colonero houses on A Street. Related excerpts from Marsh's book have also been provided [see note 1] .
15 A. Street (Frank Coppola and Antonetta Sodano)
"The house now belonging to Anne T. and Irene M. Kalvinek was sold by A.F. Jones to Frank Coppola in 1916. The Kalvinek sisters bought the place in 1957. Mr. Coppola, now deceased was at one time janitor of the new Town Hall and also carried on a tailoring business. He and Mrs. Antoinette Coppola, who died in 1950, had a large family."

13 A. Street (Salvatore Vecchione and Maria Saviano)
"The large house now belonging to Joseph and Anna Roche was sold by A.F. Jones to Salvatore and Marie Vecchione in 1912. After his death, his widow Marie and children owned it and after she died, the heirs sold it to Roche. Mrs. Anne Roche is Mrs. Marie Vecchione's daughter. They have daughters Carol A., Kathleen M. and a son."

20 A. Street (Pasquale Colonero and Dora Damore)
"The new bungalow on the South side of the street now belonging to Pasquale Colonero was built by him in 1927. It was built on land belonging to Nelson Jones once. Mrs. Dora Colonero, wife of Pasquale, died in 1958. They have several children, most of them being married in living in various places."
